Local organisations have launched a fun-filled activity campaign to keep families in Cambridgeshire entertained this summer.

The Get Activated campaign is offering hundreds of free and low-cost activities across the county.

Cambourne Child and Family Centre kicked things off by hosting a ‘Woodland Wander’ in the local nature reserve.

Cambridgeshire County Councillor Bryony Goodliffe, chair of the Children and Young People Committee, attended the event and joined in the fun.

She said: “It was wonderful to see so many families having a great time at the Forest School in Cambourne. Children had the opportunity to explore different kinds of play amongst the trees and there were lots of big smiles during the session.”

The event was the first of many activities being offered for families with children under the age of 13, run by the county council, district councils and their partners – including the local NHS, Living Sport and Healthy You.

There are many options for play, cycling, walking, sports and activities to keep families busy and having fun, including the Cambridgeshire Libraries Summer Reading Challenge, which aims to fire up children’s imaginations and unleash storytelling and creativity through the power of reading.

Children can sign up for the Challenge at their local library or mobile library, choosing six library books to read during the holidays and collecting a sticker for each book read. When they finish, they will receive a certificate and medal, with under-threes receiving a special sticker medal.

The Challenge is free to enter and open to pre-school and primary school aged children of all reading abilities.

Other events are being hosted by the Cambridgeshire Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme and at the council’s Child and Family Centres – with sessions focusing on the ‘50 Things to Do Before You’re Five’ mobile app.

This year’s campaign will also feature ‘Get Activated on Tour’, where the council will spotlight activities in each district, so make sure to follow the council’s social media to keep up to date.

By championing affordable outdoor family activities that encourage active travel, physical activity and wellbeing in various local settings and communities, the Get Activated campaign significantly contributes to Cambridgeshire County Council’s vision of creating a greener, fairer and more caring county for children and young people.

“Get Activated really is a fantastic campaign and our services and partners do a brilliant job at providing fun and learning,” said Cllr Goodliffe.

“There are hundreds of activities across the county that are free or low cost to keep everyone busy and having fun during the summer holidays. I’d encourage as many people as possible to sign up.”
