Leonard Veenendaal reports on the Wisbech RFC U12s/U13s: West Norfolk RFC Festival on October 6.
The first fixture of the new season was a festival at West Norfolk RFC. The match schedule gave the team matches against Holt RFC, Crusaders RFC, Norwich RFC and the hosts.
The Wisbech squad of 12 included two players, Malcolm and Tyler, who were making their debuts, and Fred who was returning to Sunday rugby.
A good effort and attitude in the warm-up prepared the lads to play the first match against Holt RFC.
Both teams showed a high level of skills and determination. The pace of the game was quick and the ball moved through several phases when both teams had possession. There several scoring opportunities for both teams but the match was to be tryless because of the quality of defence from both teams.
The next game was against Crusaders RFC. The play of both sides was impressive and the Wisbech team continued combine well in attack. Two good tries were scored by Wisbech and Crusaders replied with two tries of their own.
Norwich RFC were the third opponents and they proved to be the sternest test of the morning. Norwich used their strong ball carriers to put pressure on the Wisbech defenders who individually made some great tackles.
The match was a close fought contest which saw Norwich score two tries with Wisbech getting a good try of their own.
The last match was against West Norfolk RFC. The standard of play from both sets of young players was excellent. Wisbech combined well in attack and launched several attacks off scrums.
The rucking when in possession and defending, was the best of the morning. Strong mauling produced turnovers for Wisbech, and strong running and accurate handling led to pleasing individual and team tries.
There were some good kicking decisions made when under pressure and eager kick chasing. Wisbech crossed the line for five tries and did not concede a try.
A big well done is due to all the lads who played. Holt, Crusaders & Norwich were new opponents who now know how determined and skilful the Wisbech team can be. Holt RFC and Norwich RFC are big clubs and their boys have developed their rugby both at school and in club sides.
Wisbech coach Will Hall said: “ I would like to thank all the families who were on the touchline and who supported the team in their usual positive manner as well as West Norfolk RFC for organising and running the festival which was a great advert for rugby in the local area.
“It was very satisfying to watch the boys put into practice the hard work done in training in August and September. There are lots of positives to take from the morning and a good number of aspects of the game to work on in training. Above all it was great to see the team enjoy the whole experience."
