This year's sports day at a Wisbech school saw multiple athletic records shattered.

Participants included pupils of all ages, as well as 16 teachers in a staff relay at Marshland High School.

Traditional sports like javelin and discus, track events such as the 800 metres, 1,500 metres, and hurdles, along with high jump, long jump, shot put and relay races were all contested on the day's roster.

PE teacher Natalie Ward explained: “The event is a whole-school event, with pupils from all year groups competing for their houses of Attenborough, Ennis-Hill, Hawking, and Parks.

“All staff were involved with the event in different capacities."

Miss Ward further noted the importance of staff roles such as timekeepers, crowd controllers, and DJs in the successful organisation of the day.

Breaking records was the theme of the day as Year 9's Eden Nunnerley set a new school javelin record at 17.71 metres.

Year 8's Olly Davies dazzled the crowd by clocking 2.29.34 minutes, breaking Marshland's 800-metre record.

Not to be outdone, another Year 8 student, Nika Vasilijeva, added two new records to the school hall of fame.

Vasilijeva threw the shot put 8.45 metres and leapt 4.50 metres in the long jump.

The triumphant day concluded with Parks house claiming victory and headteacher Craig Jansen presenting the trophy to the team champions.

Reflecting on the significance of the event, Miss Ward said: “This whole-school event is a historic event that all pupils talk about for years after they have left.

“Sports Day is a day where all pupils show excellent camaraderie for the competitor representing their house.

"This is just as much about personal development of the individual pupils competing in front of the whole school as their sporting achievement.

“The day is loved by both pupils and staff.”
