Potholes can be a significant concern for drivers and pedestrians.
Measuring more than 10cm deep and in one case, one metre wide, these bumps can cause severe damage to car tires, suspension and pedestrians if they trip on them.
For road users taking to Fix My Street, a website that allows people to report issues to their local authority, the Fens has its fair share of potholes.
According to the RAC, there are more than one million potholes in the UK.
Their Pothole Index suggests motorists are now twice as likely to break down as a result of repeated wear caused by potholes when compared to 17 years ago.
Using Fix My Street, we’ve been on the lookout for the worst potholes in the Fens.
Here’s what we found:
Hungate Road, Emneth
This pothole is causing damage to cars, with the complainant’s own front left tyre burst on impact.
They said: “Watch out for it. Not enough room to avoid when the traffic is coming from the other direction.
Thurlands Drove, Upwell
The complainant says this pothole has been “getting worse” over the last two months, measuring one meter long and 40cm deep.
Tydd St Mary, north of Wisbech
This is another pothole that has allegedly been causing issues, particularly for these homeowners.
The complainant said: “Pothole is now so deep the cars bounce as we enter our driveway. There is no gutter or drainage but it’s on the side of the road where a gutter should be.
“The pothole measures 80cm long, 50cm wide and 10cm deep and needs urgent repair please.”
Lowgate, Tydd St Mary
This pothole has the potential to cause “tyre damage” according to one complainant who measured the hole at 35cm long.
They said: “It has sharp edges so will no doubt cause tyre damage as traffic has to move to verge to pass. Fills with water so road users are not aware how deep it is.
“All of Lowgate Road needs to be resurfaced properly not just patched or chipped. This only lasts six months.”
Downham Road, Outwell
Although not technically a pothole, this complainant thought it important to bring attention to this large hole which appears to be caused by a collapsed manhole cover.
The Fix My Street user said: “A gully or manhole has collapsed, and the cover has fallen inside the gully leaving a large and deep hole in the road itself.
“There is nothing to warn of this danger, so a couple of cones are needed urgently until it is finally repaired properly.”
It is understood that cones have been placed around the affected section, but the hole remains.
