New free Run for Fun sessions are being launched in Wisbech for adults who consider themselves to be overweight.
The sessions will form part of a free 12-week programme of support for people who want to live more healthily and lose weight.
The sessions are being offered by Fenland District Council’s Active Fenland team.
Cllr Sam Clark said: “This is another great initiative from our Active Fenland team to help people achieve happier, healthier lives.
“It’s for any adult who feels they need to lose weight and wants help and support to do that.
“The atmosphere will be fun, friendly and encouraging. It’s all about taking a first step together. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never even run for a bus before!”
Attendees will be given an information booklet full of simple weekly goals, like trying to be well hydrated, considering portion size and swapping for healthier snacks, to help them strive towards better health between sessions.
They’ll be asked to weigh themselves at the first and last sessions to chart their progress towards weight loss goals.
Anyone who is over 18 and considers themselves to be overweight or has a BMI over 25 can qualify for the sessions.
A taster session is being held from 7pm to 8pm on Tuesday, February 7 at Thomas Clarkson Academy sports hall, Corporation Road, Wisbech, PE13 2SE.
The taster session provides an opportunity to try the session out, meet the coaches and see if it is right for you. All that is required is suitable clothing and footwear for running inside a sports hall and plenty to drink.
BMI is just one health indicator and a high BMI does not automatically mean someone needs to lose weight. You can calculate your BMI via the NHS BMI Calculator at: www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-weight/bmi-calculator/
The Wisbech sessions are the first in a planned series of similar 12-week programmes in the district. Details of other sessions are being finalised. Others may focus on different forms of activity and will be based in different locations.
