Mayor of Wisbech has spoken of her pride in seeing the town come together for the recent remembrance commemorations.
Cllr Susan Wallwork described leading the parade through Wisbech on Remembrance Sunday as “the biggest honour of my mayoral career”.
She said: “Wisbech residents and the community always show their utmost respect at such meaningful events like remembrance.
“The two-minute silence was incredibly moving. There were so many people there and yet it was deadly silent.
“Everyone was fully immersed in the moment.”
She added: “I did cry; I always cry during remembrance.
“The moment the music starts playing, I’m done. I was doing fine until I saw a little girl hold her poppy up.
“She was so tiny, and to witness our next generation showing such respect for the previous generations was incredibly moving. It was so beautiful.”
Veterans, civic dignitaries, cadets, schools and residents came together to represent the Wisbech community at the event.
Special thanks went to the Salvation Army band which provided music for the ceremony at short notice.
Cllr Wallwork led the procession which started at the town council chambers and made its way to the Market Place.
It was then greeted by the cadets and other organisations based in the town and went on to the war memorial for the wreath laying ceremony.
This was followed by a church service at St Peter and St Paul’s Church.
Cllr Wallwork’s husband, David, stood alongside her wearing the military medals of his late grandfather, who served in the Army during World War Two.
Communities across the Fens held their own remembrance events throughout the weekend.
On Friday (November 11), Steve Barclay, MP for North East Cambridgeshire and Health Secretary, attended the commemorations in Wisbech for Armistice Day.
Cllr Peter Human, the Deputy Mayor of Wisbech, also attended a remembrance event at the Nestlé Purina site in Cromwell Road.
On Saturday (November 10), Colonel Mark Knight, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, joined the Mayor for a special service at Fenland Park before Wisbech Town FC’s game against Sherwood Colliery.
Cllr Wallwork said: “Again, another incredible experience and it was even better to watch Wisbech Town win 1-0.
“It is an honour to be the Mayor of Wisbech and I'm loving every minute of it.
“Our town is the best town and seeing everyone come together this weekend for the remembrance events has just proved why.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who helped make it happen.”
