An inquest has been opened into the death of one of the drivers involved in a three-car collision on the A16 near Peterborough.

Mohammad Sarfraz, 56, was one of two people who died in the incident which happened on the afternoon of April 22.

At the time, police said a blue Volvo V40 heading north was in collision with a brown Toyota Prius travelling in the opposite direction, near to the “blue bridge” towards Newborough.

The brown Prius – which was being driven by Mr Sarfraz - then collided with a red Ford Kuga travelling north.

Mr Sarfraz and the passenger of the Volvo, a woman in her 70s, from Amersham, in Buckinghamshire, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Volvo, a man in his 70s, also from Amersham, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, with serious injuries.

The status of his condition is not known.

The Kuga driver, a man in his 60s, from Liverpool, suffered minor injuries.

Caroline Jones, an area coroner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, opened Mr Sarfraz’s inquest on May 2.

At the brief hearing held at Lawrence Court, Huntingdon, she adjourned the matter for a future date to be fixed.

Mr Sarfraz’s provisional cause of death was listed as 1A multiple traumatic injuries.

Cambridgeshire Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forwards and help officers piece together what happened leading up to the crash.
