An “extraordinary” Wisbech special school has received a prestigious national award for its work to support the wellbeing of pupils.

On Track Wisbech, an independent school providing specialist education for students aged 11-16, has been awarded the School of Excellence award by Thrive.

Thrive is an organisation which trains teachers and other education professionals to support the social and emotional development of children and young people.

The award is the highest level of achievement in Thrive’s Ambassador Schools scheme, which was launched in 2020 as a way of recognising excellence in member schools.

Deputy headteacher Gemma Adams said: “It is such a proud moment for us.

“Thrive has been part of the school’s journey from the start and its success is down to the commitment of our staff.

“Thrive allows us to look at the behaviour of the child to gain a more in depth understanding about what they may be experiencing.

“We have seen that a consistent use of the Thrive Approach has helped improve attitudes to learning, increased attendance, and improvements in learners’ emotional and social skills and relationships within peer groups.

“The children are also delighted that their school has been recognised for its amazing work – they are so proud of their school.”

As a fellow Thrive licensed practitioner, colleague Natasha Moore has worked closely with Gemma on the school’s use of the Thrive approach.

She added: “It’s a great accolade. We all enjoy embedding every aspect of the Thrive Approach in our school and seeing how our students flourish as a result.”

Natasha and Gemma were presented with the School of Excellence award plaque by Lewis Griffiths and Jennie Hogan of Thrive at a celebration event on Friday March 22 also attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Wisbech, Cllr Peter Human and Mrs Janet Tanfield.

Anna Smee, managing director of Thrive, said: “On Track Wisbech is an extraordinary school which puts the wellbeing of pupils at the very centre of their work through their use of the Thrive Approach.

“This award is recognition of that amazing work.”
